Job summary

Westfield Specialty Insurance is offering a paid ten-week intern program in Berkeley Heights, NJ, with opportunities to learn across claims, IT, and operations. The program runs June 7 to August 13, 2027 and includes training, mentorship, and exposure to senior leaders.

Interns will support the claims team, gain hands-on insurance industry knowledge, and may discuss full-time opportunities after graduation. Compensation is $25/hour, with onboarding and professional development experiences.

Qualifications

• Currently matriculated student enrolled at a 4 year college or university pursuing either a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (required).
• Strong GPA preferred (Minimum GPA of 3.2 required).
• Strong interpersonal skills, including strong oral and written communication skills.
• Leadership experience through work or involvement in community service, athletics, clubs, or other activities preferred.
• Technically adept/digitally savvy.
• Ability to be onsite in office 4 days a week.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the intake and setup of new claims in internal systems.
• Review loss notices and verify the completeness and accuracy of documentation.
• Organize and maintain digital and physical claim files, ensuring all relevant documents are properly stored.
• Assist with gathering and summarizing key claim information (timelines, policy terms, limits, exclusions).
• Review and summarize relevant contracts, policies, or legal documents under the guidance of a claims examiner.
• Liaise with underwriters, legal counsel and internal stakeholders to request additional claim-related information.
• Participate in claim review meetings or status calls with claims adjusters, legal teams, and risk managers.
• Input claim details into claims management systems and update claim status as required.
• Help identify and correct data inconsistencies or errors in claims files.
• Track deadlines for litigation or investigation milestones (response dates, settlement discussions).
• Learn the end-to-end claims lifecycle in specialty lines (FNOL, investigation, coverage, litigation, resolution).
• Observe claim strategies in high-risk areas like cyber, malpractice, or D&O liability.
• Attend trainings on insurance law, policy interpretation, and regulatory compliance specific to specialty lines.
• Attend training sessions to learn about insurance products, policy administration systems, and regulatory requirements.
• Gain exposure to business operations and how they support the insurance value chain (underwriting, claims, billing, customer service).
• Shadow professionals across departments to understand cross-functional operations.
