About the Role Our client, an established Anchorage-based insurance organization, is seeking a detail-oriented Claims Assistant / Adjuster Trainee to join its claims team. Reporting to the Claims Adjuster, this role provides primary administrative and technical support to the claims department, maintains official records, and serves as the front-desk receptionist for the office. This is a great opportunity for someone with insurance or claims experience who wants to grow toward an adjuster role, with hands-on exposure to Alaska Workers' Compensation.
What You’ll Do
- Set up new claims and maintain accurate electronic files in the claims system
- Process incoming mail and scan documents, verifying that every page is captured
- Prepare correspondence and respond to inquiries from claimants, members, medical providers, and vendors
- Prepare and process medical bills for audit, enter bills for payment, and issue payments with complete backup documentation
- Request medical records and manage the discovery process
- Research disputed medical billings
- Arrange travel for injured workers
- Prepare insurance claim kits
- Serve as primary receptionist, answering phones and greeting visitors with professionalism
- Other duties as assigned
What You’ll Bring
- Prior experience as a claims assistant or in a comparable insurance industry role
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
- Typing speed of 40+ WPM with minimal errors
- Clear, professional written and verbal communication skills
- Strong reasoning skills and the ability to learn state and federal reporting requirements, the Alaska Workers' Compensation Act, and related legal processes
- Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to stay focused on detailed work for extended periods
- A calm, professional demeanor under tight deadlines and pressure
- Valid Alaska driver's license with a good driving record
- Ability to obtain Alaska Notary Public certification within 90 days of hire
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- This position is 100% in office, with continual computer use
- Occasional standing, walking, reaching, stooping, and lifting up to 25 lbs
- Occasional travel to remote Alaska communities, including by small aircraft, sometimes in challenging weather
- Occasional overtime may be required
- This is a non-exempt (hourly) position
