Job summary

HDR, Inc. seeks a Civil Transmission Line Intern/Co-Op to join our Resources Business Group in Raleigh or Charlotte, NC.

You will assist with the civil and structural design of overhead transmission lines and support models, drawings, and calculations under experienced engineers. As an intern, you will coordinate with multiple disciplines, perform entry-level calculations, and prepare design documentation while following safety and company standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform entry-level calculations related to transmission structures and foundations.
• Prepare and update engineering drawings, material quantities, and design documentation per standards.
• Coordinate with transmission line engineers and other specialists to support delivery.
• Assist with field activities such as site visits and condition documentation.

HDR is seeking a Civil Transmission Line Intern/Co-Op to join our Resources Business Group. This position will be based in our Raleigh, NC or Charlotte, NC office.

In the role of Civil Transmission Line Intern/Co-Op, we'll count on you to:

• Assist with the civil and structural design of overhead transmission lines, including route development, structure spotting, structure selection, and preparation of design criteria.
• Support development and review of PLS-CADD models, plan and profile drawings, structure loading calculations, conductor clearance evaluations, and other engineering deliverables under the direction of experienced engineers.
• Perform entry-level calculations and evaluations related to transmission structures and foundations, including applied loads, soil parameters, foundation concepts, and constructability considerations.
• Prepare and update engineering drawings, material quantities, cost estimates, technical specifications, calculation packages, and design documentation in accordance with NESC, ASCE, client, and company standards.
• Coordinate with transmission line engineers, civil and geotechnical engineers, surveyors, environmental and permitting specialists, designers, and other project team members to support integrated project delivery.
• Assist with field activities such as site visits, existing-condition documentation, survey and geotechnical data review, construction observations, and preparation of field notes while following applicable safety requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prefer 2 years completed toward degree with 3.0+ GPA
• Demonstrated knowledge of software packages related to transmission line design including PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, or similar transmission line design software
• Knowledge of industry codes and standards (NESC, ASCE, IEEE)
• Internship or coursework related to power transmission systems
• Preference will be given to local candidates
