About the Role:
The Civil Senior Project Engineer role is a hands-on technical leadership position for an experienced engineer who can independently develop civil designs and deliver coordinated construction documents with minimal day-to-day oversight. This role requires strong technical judgment and the ability to move projects forward from initial planning through permitting and construction support.
Senior Project Engineers take ownership of technical project delivery, proactively coordinate with clients, reviewing agencies, and other disciplines, and mentor junior staff. They are expected to identify project needs, resolve routine design and coordination issues, and recognize when to involve Conterra’s principals or project managers in more complex decisions. This position offers varied project experience, direct coordination with firm leadership, and opportunities for growth.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and independently complete civil design for land development and renewable energy projects.
- Perform grading, drainage, utility, site layout, and erosion control design.
- Lead drainage analyses, including hydrologic and hydraulic calculations, stormwater conveyance design, detention and retention pond design, and drainage report preparation.
- Use AutoCAD Civil 3D for hands-on design and construction plan production.
- Prepare and oversee complete, coordinated construction plans, engineering reports, specifications, and supporting calculations.
- Review designs for accuracy, completeness, constructability, and compliance with applicable criteria.
- Coordinate directly and proactively with clients, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), surveyors, geotechnical engineers, and other project disciplines to obtain information, resolve conflicts, and advance deliverables.
- Confirm applicable permitting requirements, coordinate agency submittals, and address review comments.
- Identify missing information and design challenges early; develop solutions and communicate needed decisions before they affect deadlines.
- Mentor junior engineers through task delegation, clear technical direction, design reviews, and constructive feedback.
- Coordinate technical tasks and deadlines with principals and project managers, monitoring design effort and flagging potential scope or budget impacts.
- Participate in occasional site visits and construction coordination, with limited travel.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to independently complete civil/site designs and deliver coordinated permit and construction documents with minimal oversight.
- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, including recent hands-on design and production experience.
- Experience leading drainage design, including hydrologic and hydraulic calculations, stormwater conveyance systems, and detention and retention pond design.
- Experience independently preparing drainage reports and other technical engineering documentation.
- Strong technical knowledge of grading, utilities, erosion control, and applicable design criteria.
- Experience coordinating directly with clients, AHJs, and other disciplines, including proactively obtaining information and resolving design and permitting issues.
- Experience reviewing engineering work and mentoring junior staff.
- Strong written communication, organizational, and coordination skills.
- Ability to manage assigned work and deadlines in a remote environment while maintaining proactive communication with the project team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Approximately 8+ years of relevant civil/site design experience.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license, or the ability to obtain Colorado licensure within six months of hire.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Experience with Colorado land development and local permitting requirements.
- Experience with solar, battery energy storage, substation, or other renewable energy projects.
- Floodplain and hydraulic modeling experience with HEC-RAS and/or FLO-2D.
- Competitive salary plus bonus eligibility
- 401(k) with company match
- Health, dental, vision, and life insurance
- Paid time off
- Flexible schedule and fully remote work environment
