Company Overview
Our client is a civil engineering and land surveying firm specializing in land development consulting in the Philadelphia metro and New Jersey market. Founded in 2011, the company prepares planning and design documents for civil site projects across the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, and its work centers on helping clients navigate the land-development approval process. The firm is growing and adding to its engineering team.
Position Overview
The Civil Project Engineer will take on substantive site civil design work: layouts, grading and drainage, stormwater management, and water and sewer utility design, rather than drafting alone or full project management. This is a mid-level design seat expected to work with meaningful autonomy: taking on complex assignments with less oversight, marking up designs clearly for the drafting team, and considering how a design decision affects other deliverables, deadlines, and jurisdictional triggers. The ideal candidate has solid stormwater fundamentals and strong AutoCAD capability; New Jersey-specific regulatory knowledge can be trained.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and prepare layouts and detailed design drawings, including grading, drainage, and utilities, from engineering notes, sketches, and other drawings
- Perform civil site design across land development projects in the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors
- Prepare stormwater management design, supporting calculation reports, and facilities maintenance guidelines
- Apply hydrology and hydraulics fundamentals to stormwater design using HydroCAD
- Design water and sewer utilities, and handle occasional road-related work such as road widening and associated curb line design
- Develop designs and communicate them clearly to the drafting team through digital or hand markups that a drafter can act on directly
- Research ordinance and zoning requirements, regulations, and project-specific data related to design
- Prepare permit applications and identify when a design may trigger an additional approval, permit, or agency review
- Recognize when further research is needed, such as whether wetlands may affect what can be built, and raise jurisdictional uncertainty with the project manager
- Work closely with drafters, project managers, and senior team members to maintain plan coordination
- Participate in client-facing conversations to understand client needs, then propose an approach to the project manager and move the work forward
- Review drawings for completeness and accuracy
- Complete drawing and project responsibilities within scope, budget, and schedule
- Organize and maintain all revisions of project drawings, plot files, and project-related information
- Attend the weekly team meeting
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Environmental, or Mechanical)
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a civil engineering discipline
- Proven mid-level civil site design ability, beyond drafting-only work
- Hands-on grading and drainage design capability
- Working knowledge of stormwater design fundamentals, including hydrology and hydraulics
- Professional-level proficiency in AutoCAD
- HydroCAD experience (the firm uses it almost exclusively for stormwater work)
- Civil 3D proficiency, including surfaces, profiles, cross sections, and pipe networks
- Ability to work with autonomy on complex assignments, communicate a proposed design approach, and keep work moving with limited oversight
- Ability to consider the broader project context, including how a design decision affects other deliverables, deadlines, and jurisdictional requirements
- Ability to communicate design intent clearly through markups or written instructions that a drafter can understand and use
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and adapt to changing needs
- Intermediate proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Word and Excel, and Adobe Acrobat
- Sufficient schedule overlap with US Eastern business hours for team coordination
Preferred Qualifications
- New Jersey or tri-state land development experience
- Familiarity with New Jersey regulatory agencies and triggers, including the Pinelands Commission and Soil Conservation District requirements
- Licensed Professional Engineer, particularly in NJ and/or PA
- Seven or more years of experience in the land use development discipline
- Water and sewer or road design exposure.
- Land surveying experience
- Experience with digital plan review or markup tools such as Bluebeam or Adobe
- Location: Remote (LATAM Applicants Only)
- Schedule: Full-Time (40 Hours/Week — flexible, with overlap required during US Eastern business hours)
