Job summary

Benton County Public Works/Highway Department is offering a Civil Engineering Technician Intern I position for a 2027 summer session. This hands-on internship is designed for recent high school graduates preparing to enter college and considering civil engineering or land surveying.

You will gain practical, on-the-job experience through mentorship with Engineering Technicians and staff. Duties include assisting with highway design, surveying, material testing, and construction inspection, plus

Qualifications

• Must have high school diploma or GED by start date.
• Must be at least 18 years old by start date.
• Must have been accepted into a civil engineering or land surveying program with a fall start date.
• Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive in Minnesota.
• Must pass a background check and license verification.

Responsibilities

• Assist with planning, developing, and implementing highway design and construction projects.
• Assist with staking, surveying, drafting, and design work to ensure compliance with regulations.
• Assist with inspecting and documenting construction activities, quantities, and material quality.
• Assist with performing tests of soils, aggregates, bituminous, concrete, and other construction materials.
• Assist with monitoring and inspecting project progress and construction methods to ensure specifications and laws are followed.
