Job summary

IMEG is hiring a Civil Engineering Intern in Fairfax, VA for a 10–12 week summer program. Work with experienced engineers on design, fieldwork, reports, and permit applications within a 100% ESOP-owned firm.

You will gain hands-on experience supporting real project work while learning budgeting, cross‑functional collaboration, and client expectations in the Northern Virginia market.

Qualifications

• Completed at least 2 years towards a BS in Civil Engineering.
• Strong interest in design consulting.
• May assist with field duties such as surveying and materials testing.
• Ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally.

Responsibilities

• Assist with design portions of projects according to code and IMEG standards.
• Assist with researching resources for commercially available equipment.
• Assist with client relations, project design notebooks, and documentation for permanent records.
• Coordinate design and schedules with architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, technology, clerical, and equipment suppliers.
• Document design decisions, meetings, and client instructions; monitor progress.
• Review project documents for accuracy and completeness before final checks.
• Prepare and issue addendum information.
• Conduct periodic field observations and other services as required by the contract services agreement.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to meet project goals within budgets.

This posting is for Summer 2027 Internship opportunities. IMEG is hiring a Civil Engineering Intern in Fairfax, VA to work closely with experienced engineers and consultants on engineering analysis, design, field inspections, report writing, permit applications, site drainage and grading designs, and learning the civil engineering trade. Over 10-12 weeks, you will gain hands‑on experience supporting real project work.

You will also help the team work within project monetary budgets and collaborate with cross‑functional teams to meet project goals and client expectations. The team you would join supports transportation and municipal work and brings a broad Northern Virginia civil practice with experience across data center, industrial, education, survey, ALTA, and SUE work, delivering resilient, environmentally responsible infrastructure.

What You'll Do

• Assist with reviewing project documents for accuracy and completeness prior to requesting a final check
• Assist with preparation and issuance of addendum information

What You'll Bring (Required)

Education

• Completed at least 2 years towards a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent required

Required Skills/Abilities

• May be required to assist with field duties such as surveying and materials testing
• Strong interest in design consulting
• Skill in the use of Microsoft Office programs, CAD software and BIM
• Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups

State of Virginia Pay Range: $22.50–$24.50 per hour

The range listed above represents the base pay IMEG reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position in the work location identified above at the time of posting. For positions available in multiple locations, the minimums and maximums may vary based on work location. Individual compensation will be determined based on job‑related factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, abilities, and licensure and certifications.

Other rewards may include annual bonuses and stock ownership options.
