Job summary

Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) seeks a construction intern to inspect routine items for plan conformance under moderate supervision, supporting field and office teams across several Kansas City area offices.

You'll perform inspections of asphalt and concrete works, assist in measurements and reports, maintain documentation, and support staff with scheduling and staking tasks while maintaining safety and quality standards.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in a relevant bachelor's or post-bachelor's degree program; for engineering candidates, program must be ABET-accredited.
• Must possess, and maintain, an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher out of 4.0.
• Must have completed at least 30 credit hours.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates and performs construction inspections verifying that contractors' activities are in compliance with contracts, specifications, and engineering principles.
• Performs duties of inspector in charge of routine construction items, such as asphaltic or portland cement concrete plants, asphaltic or concrete paving, including grading and base, small bridges, concrete box and pipe culverts; inspects general or special items, such as utility adjustments, signing, traffic signals and lighting.
• Performs measurements, computations, or other work in preparing final plans, change orders, contractor payment estimates, and engineering costs.
• Maintains required construction documentation, records and files; prepares progress and other reports, keeps supervisors full informed as to activities or unusual conditions on the job.
• Provides field checks for contractor surveying operations; serves as party chief on routine layout and staking; services as instrument operator on staking large bridges, other critical structures, or complex interchanges.
• Performs lead worker responsibilities, which may include providing general instruction, assigning, and reviewing work, coaching, and training, providing guidance and instruction in the proper and most efficient methods of accomplishing tasks, and providing input to the direct supervisor on staffing decisions and performance management.
