Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s in civil engineering or Bachelor’s in civil engineering with MBA.
  • Experience: One year of civil engineering experience post-PE licensure.
  • Alternate: B.S. in civil engineering with three years of civil engineering experience post-PE licensure.
  • Alternate: Associate’s in engineering/engineering technology with five years of civil engineering experience post-PE licensure.

Responsibilities

  • Directs and reviews activities for multiple complex transportation projects to ensure compliance with policies.
  • Supervises project staff; provides guidance on complex design issues and prioritizes workloads.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperation among subordinates to foster a professional work atmosphere.
  • Develops engineering documents and reviews estimates essential to highway construction contracts.
  • Oversees annual performance evaluations and staff development.

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Highway Design, has a full-time vacancy for a Civil Engineer V.

Summary

Performs professional administrative civil engineering functions involving the design of highway construction projects.

YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

Education: Master’s degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in civil engineering, or possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in civil engineering and possession of a Master of Business Administration degree from an accredited institute of higher education.

Experience: One year of experience in civil engineering post Professional Engineer licensure.

OR

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in civil engineering.

Experience: Three years of experience in civil engineering post Professional Engineer licensure.

OR

Education: Associate's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in an engineering or engineering technology field relevant to program area in which position is assigned.

Experience: Five years of experience in civil engineering post Professional Engineer licensure.

License/Certification:

  • Valid driver's license or access to transportation for statewide travel
  • Professional Engineer (PE) Licensure with designation in Civil, Civil Highway, Geo Technical or Structural Engineering

Other Requirements: Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards established by the hiring agency.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices. Knowledge of inspection and testing techniques of materials used in construction projects. Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations related to the engineering option. Knowledge of survey principles. Knowledge of hydraulics, soils and materials. Knowledge of supervisory principles. Ability to plan the work and supervise a staff of professional, technical, clerical and other employees. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to work complicated mathematical problems. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, subordinates, public officials and other professionals. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.

NH Professional Engineer license within 12 months of hire

RESPONSIBILITIES

Directs, supervises, plans, coordinates, and reviews the activities for multiple complex transportation projects to ensure compliance with Federal and State policies for highway improvements.

Directs and supervises project staff in the completion of project designs. Provides guidance on complex design issues to team members. Recommends design concepts and is responsible for design progress.

Advises, appraises and supervises bureau personnel and/or consultants and the progress of work to maintain productivity, assure proper development of projects, and promote an understanding of Department policies and standards.

Monitors design progress and assigns priorities of engineering efforts in order to meet established project schedules. Works closely with the section chief and project managers to prioritize project workloads.

Develops effective work methods, administrative procedures and engineering standards to increase efficiency resulting in improved engineering solutions.

Develops engineering documents and reviews engineering estimates essential to highway construction contracts.

Supervises assigned employees with responsibility for annual performance evaluations, assigning work and identifying training needs, interviewing and making recommendations for hire, and making recommendations for disciplinary action.

Establishes and maintains cooperation among subordinates in order to foster a professional work atmosphere.
