Short Description

Bowman has an opportunity for a Civil Engineer I to join our team in Chicago, IL.

Purpose

Evaluate, select, and apply standard transportation engineering techniques, procedures and criteria on moderately complex transportation and infrastructure projects. Assist in developing sustainable transportation solutions to make communities more livable by reducing traffic congestion, promoting multiple modes of transportation, supporting land development, and improving safety for all users.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Direction

• Receive general instruction on key objectives for execution and direction as needed, especially on difficult assignments and possible solutions. Work is completed using standard engineering techniques and design principles and is reviewed by senior staff to ensure sound professional judgement.

At The Operational And Company Level

• Work closely with senior members to learn about and assist with transportation engineering and planning work.
• Assist with the marketing of the firm’s capabilities to establish new clients and enhance relationships.
• Coordinate with other disciplines and internal services, groups, and offices as necessary.

Do the Work

• Work with a multidisciplinary team to solve challenging transportation issues.
• Support design teams and project managers in preliminary engineering/concept development studies, contract plan preparation, through final stages of design and construction.
• Conduct research on permitting and design criteria to assist in design development of roadway, highway, and bridge improvement projects.
• Prepare maps and graphics for public and client meetings; perform data analysis, field reviews, and data collection; conduct research on trends and best practices; contribute to stakeholder and public engagement efforts; develop solutions to complex problems; and present recommendations.
• Prepare engineering plans using standard design criteria.
• Assist and support in the preparation of reports and preliminary plans based on project analyses and assessments.
• Perform design computations and develop quantity takeoffs.
• Work both in the field and in an office setting.
• Draft transmittals, memos, meeting minutes, letters, and other documentation and communications.
• Assist in preparing plans, specifications, construction schedules, cost estimates, permits, and/or designs for projects.
• Conduct field visits, data collection, and observations.
• Develop and maintain accurate and organized project files.
• Follow established firm goals, SOPs, and QA/QC procedures and assist in the QA/QC review of technical work of other staff.
• Work on various analyses and design aspects of engineering projects which may include road/access design, corridor projects, multimodal projects, bridge design, safety projects, and other associated engineering services.
• Apply client-specific design criteria and ordinance requirements in the development of design engineering tasks.
• Increase familiarity with OpenRoads Designer when preparing engineering and design documents.
• Assist with drainage and geometrics design development for roadway and highway improvement projects.
• Prepare reports documenting findings and design criteria in alternative development and engineering reports.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related engineering discipline required at time of employment.
• Engineer in Training certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months).
• Academic or internship experience in transportation discipline preferred.
• Entry‑level position; no prior experience required. Any professional experience is a plus.
• Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (EIT) preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Valid state driver’s license and ability to pass a motor vehicle check or reliable transportation to/from the office and/or project site strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of MicroStation and/or AutoCAD, or other engineering design software.
• Interest and/or familiarity with Department of Transportation permitting agencies and industry design, permitting and construction standards, and/or policies and procedures.
• Interest and/or familiarity with Federal and State ADA Standards and Guidelines.
