Job description

The City of Galveston is seeking a City Engineer. The City of Galveston is a unique coastal community on the upper Texas Gulf Coast located just 50 miles southeast of Houston on an island stretching 32 miles long and 2.5 miles wide. Galveston Island is home to just over 50,000 residents and is also a major regional destination, attracting more than 7 million visitors annually. With a rare combination of economic opportunity, coastal beauty, cultural richness, and historic character, Galveston continues to be one of Texas' most unique and desirable communities for residents, businesses, and visitors alike, offering amenities of a larger city while maintaining the welcoming feel of a small-town community.

The City is looking for a new City Engineer to join their team! Under the direction of the Executive Director of Public Works and Engineering, this role serves as the City's senior engineering professional and provides strategic leadership for the planning, design, construction, and delivery of municipal infrastructure and capital improvement projects. This position is responsible for leading the Engineering and Construction Divisions with an annual budget of $347 Million, including Capital Improvements and oversees a diverse portfolio of public infrastructure projects, including water and wastewater systems, roadways, drainage facilities, public buildings, and other municipal improvements.

The City Engineer provides technical leadership by evaluating engineering designs, recommending modifications and improvements, ensuring adherence to approved plans and specifications, and managing project expenditures within established budget parameters, contract administration and performance, monitoring project quality and progress, along with change orders and dispute resolution. This position also provides leadership and oversight for the design and construction of local, state, and federally funded projects, collaborating with key stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery, regulatory compliance, and alignment with the City's operational priorities and community development goals.

Candidates shall have at a minimum a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field; AND five years’ experience in comprehensive municipal engineering operations, including five years of management or supervisory experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates must be licensed to practice as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Texas issued by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers. If licensed in another state, must acquire license reciprocity in the State of Texas within six (6) months of date of hire. Municipal government experience is strongly preferred, along with proficiency in computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and other engineering technologies used to support infrastructure planning and project delivery.
