Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Pick up and deliver freight between Service Centers and customers, supporting the selling process.

Essential Functions

1. Operate tractor-trailer combinations, including doubles (and triples where applicable) and straight trucks.
2. Perform daily pre-trip and safety inspections on equipment.
3. Hook and unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer.
4. Handle freight using motorized and manual equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks.
5. Secure freight inside trailers with tools and supplies like pallets, straps, and ropes.
6. Recoup or repair damaged freight as necessary.
7. Verify and complete required documentation and reports.
8. Comply with hazardous material regulations and procedures.
9. Collect freight charges via cash or checks, maintaining documentation.
10. Follow dispatch instructions and communicate delays, arrivals, or equipment issues.
11. Communicate with customers about pick-up or delivery needs and solicit additional business.
12. Provide internal and external customer service.
13. Request additional business from customers and refer leads to sales for new opportunities.
14. Perform chaining of vehicle tires if required.
15. Perform duties of a road driver or dock employee as operationally necessary.
16. Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies.

Qualifications

• Possess a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with double/triple, hazardous materials, and tank endorsements. Automatic transmission restriction allowed.
• At least one year of recent experience or successful completion of FedEx Freight Driver Development Course.
• Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards.
• Meet all DOT regulatory requirements under section 391 of the FMC regulations.
• Operate Long Combination Vehicles (LCV) in specified states, meeting qualification standards.
• Ability to count and perform basic math.
• Basic communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to lift/carry freight up to 100 pounds.
• Ability to sit for long periods, and perform physical activities like bending, twisting, and climbing.
• Follow instructions and complete training.
• Work independently or as part of a team.

Working Conditions

• Drive in all weather conditions and on various roads.
• Exposure to noise, vibration, dust, diesel fumes, and hazardous materials.
• Hours may vary based on operational needs.
• Hazardous Materials endorsement required within 120 days of employment.

Pay Transparency & Compensation

Pay ranges from $31.71 to $36.71 hourly, with additional mileage pay for linehaul duties. Starting pay is $31.71/hour.
