Job summary

The Abilene Public Library seeks a friendly, customer-focused Library Assistant to greet patrons, register for library cards, operate the self-check system, and resolve account issues under the Branch Manager.

You will assist with circulation tasks, help patrons navigate the online catalog and digital resources, manage holds and returns, shelve materials, and support Readers Advisory with a courteous public-service approach.

Qualifications

• Proficiency with library systems and Dewey Decimal knowledge.
• Ability to use library software and catalog/digital resources.
• Strong public-facing communication and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Check in/out library materials at the circulation desk.
• Register patrons for library cards and assist with account issues.
• Enter and update patron and item data in the library system.
• Shelve materials, read shelves, and create displays for organization.
• Assist patrons with online catalogs and digital resources, including Readers Advisory.
• Provide hands-on help with computers, printing, and photocopying.
• Assist with holds, claims returned, and missing items tasks.
