Job summary

The Prospect Heights Public Library District is seeking a part-time shelver to support daily operations, shelving new materials and keeping shelves tidy.

You will handle shelving tasks, assist patrons with directions, and perform light duties as assigned. This role requires English fluency and reliability, and includes lifting up to 25 pounds and standing for extended periods.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of Dewey Decimal System and alpha filing order
• Consistent and timely attendance
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
• Ability to work independently

Responsibilities

• Shelve all material recently checked in
• Shelve all material retrieved from study or reading areas
• Perform routine shelf reading conducted on an ongoing basis
• Straighten and shift library materials as needed
• Assist on various projects as directed
• Answer simple directional questions as needed
• Other duties as assigned

Job description

Hours: Part-time, 10 hours per week, Monday and Thursday evenings, Saturday daytime

Pay: $16.00-$16.50/hour

Performs tasks relating to shelving library materials, maintaining library shelves and general patron assistance.

Primary duties and responsibilities include:

• Shelve all material recently checked in
• Shelve all material retrieved from study or reading areas
• Perform routine shelf reading conducted on an ongoing basis
• Straighten and shift library materials as needed
• Assist on various projects as directed
• Answer simple directional questions as needed
• Other duties as assigned

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

• Ability to read, write and communicate fluently in English
• Frequently required to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and reach various heights
• Physical ability to stand for extended periods of time
• Ability to lift and carry items up to 25 pounds
• Ability to push/pull items of 100 pounds or higher while utilizing a cart
• Ability to perform fine motor skills tasks
• Visual acuity sufficient to read various font sizes
