Job description

CHOP - Assistant Professor of Epidemiology (Epidemiologic Methods and Causal Inference)

Location: Philadelphia, PA

Open Date: Aug 14, 2023

Deadline: Aug 14, 2025 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Assistant Professor position in either the non-tenure clinician educator track or the tenure track. Expertise is required in the specific area of epidemiologic methods development and applications, with the ability to establish oneself as a research leader in their area of methodologic specialization. Expertise in study design and analysis, causal inference, clinical trials, or similar research frameworks is preferred. While prior experience in pediatric research is not required, a strong interest in child and adolescent health is expected. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Epidemiology or related field.

Teaching responsibilities may include participation in programs leading to the PhD in Epidemiology, Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology, and/or Master of Public Health, as well as teaching epidemiology in other programs. Candidates are expected to have a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring.

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include the development of an innovative program developing and evaluating epidemiologic methods as well as participating in collaborative research projects relevant to pediatric populations in collaboration with faculty based at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Perelman School of Medicine.

Applicants for a tenure track faculty position should focus primarily on the development of innovative, leading-edge epidemiologic methods, with secondary emphasis on collaborative research projects within Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Perelman School of Medicine. Applicants for a clinician-educator track faculty position should have outstanding productivity in collaborative research, as well as methodological research experience. There is a rich mix of ongoing health research programs at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to provide motivation and opportunities for the development of novel methods on wide-ranging domains of population, clinical, and translational science.

The University of Pennsylvania and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia provide a vibrant team-science-oriented environment that is ideal for epidemiologic collaboration and application-driven methodological research. The Division of Epidemiology includes over 65 full-time faculty with either a primary or secondary appointment who have diverse expertise across many different health-related and methodological areas. Ours is one of 3 divisions constituting the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics, an integral part of Penn Medicine, one of the nation's top medical school and academic health systems, with very strong links to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics is home to Penn's Center for Causal Inference, a leading center in the field. The placement of Epidemiology in the Perelman School of Medicine with world-class medical, biological, and population scientists, as part of an integrated campus including the Wharton School of Business, School of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Engineering and Applied Science and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, provides an ideal setting for cross-disciplinary collaboration and impactful quantitative research in pediatric health.

We seek candidates who embrace and reflect diversity in the broadest sense. The University of Pennsylvania and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia are EOEs. Minorities/women/individuals with disabilities/protected veterans are encouraged to apply.
