Job summary

The University at Buffalo is seeking a Plant Utilities Assistant for the Chilled Water Plant. You will operate and maintain boilers, chillers, pumps, and related equipment to support campus facilities.

Responsibilities include troubleshooting equipment, monitoring readings, and supervising helpers as required. A strong background in HVAC and boiler operation is preferred, with safety and reliability as top priorities.

Qualifications

• Authorized to work in the United States by start date.
• Completion of NYS apprenticeship or equivalent certification for stationary engineers.
• Experience with HVAC systems, boilers, and related equipment.
• Demonstrated safety-conscious and compliant with procedures.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair boilers, chiller, pumps and power plant equipment.
• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, or plumbing breakdowns and advise on repairs.
• Check mechanical rooms and ensure proper operation of equipment.
• Operate and test water softeners and boiler water limits.
• Take readings on meters and gauges for proper operation.
• Monitor air compressors, perform blow down and add oil as needed.
• May supervise Plant Utilities Helpers as required.

New York State Dept. of Labor registered apprenticeship (stationary engineers, plant maintenance, HVAC)

Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Eng./Mechanical Eng./Electrical Eng./Marine Eng.

Associate’s degree in HVAC

HVAC certificate or diploma (BOCES 440 hours) or equivalent certificate in HVAC/boiler operations

One year of hands-on experience in maintenance/operation of HVAC systems and boilers

One year of hands-on experience in a residential setting with HVAC/boiler work
