Job summary

American Humane seeks a Chief Development Officer to lead philanthropy, expand donor relations, and drive revenue toward the 2030 Strategic Plan. The CDO partners with the SVP/COO, President & CEO and executive leadership to set ambitious fundraising goals and ensure sustainable growth.

The role oversees the fundraising function, builds a high-performing team, cultivates major gifts, and expands donor markets nationally and globally, with emphasis on principal gifts and corporate/foundation

Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years in senior fundraising leadership in organizations of similar size and complexity to American Humane.
• Proven experience leading a team of fundraising professionals.
• Demonstrated track record of meeting or exceeding fundraising and budget goals.
• Experience identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding high-level donors.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Outstanding interpersonal skills with collaborative approach.
• Familiarity with fundraising software (e.g., Salesforce).
• CFRE certification preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Responsibilities

• Accountable for the organization’s philanthropic revenue performance and lead fundraising strategies aligned with the 2030 Plan.
• Communicate the impact of American Humane and its programs to donors and stakeholders.
• Manage a portfolio of high-level donors capable of multi-figure gifts.
• Build a broad network of prospective partners and donors across markets.
• Engage COO/CEO to strengthen relationships nationally and globally with major donors.
• Develop and execute fundraising strategies with senior leadership and partner teams.
• Oversee events and initiatives to maximize revenue and donor engagement.
• Provide strategic guidance on portfolio strategy and complex gifts.
• Represent American Humane at events and keep leadership informed on fundraising progress.
• Ensure alignment of fundraising with program priorities and growth goals.
