Job summary

South Coast Marines Limited is seeking a Chief Mate to lead the deck department on offshore vessels. The role reports to the Captain and focuses on vessel safety, cargo operations, and stability management.

You will supervise Able Seamen and deck ratings, perform ballast and stability calculations, and ensure compliance with STCW and BRM standards while supporting navigation and drills. Candidates must hold a Chief Mate CoC (Reg.

Job Purpose

The Chief Mate serves as the head of the deck department and is second-in-command after the Captain. This role is responsible for supervising deck operations, ensuring vessel safety, and managing cargo and stability. The Chief Mate plays a vital role in maintaining compliance with international maritime standards and supporting the overall efficiency of vessel operations.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the deck department.
• Supervise cargo operations (where applicable).
• Oversee maintenance of hull, deck, and safety equipment.
• Perform stability calculations and manage ballast operations.
• Act as Safety Officer onboard, ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
• Supervise Able Seamen (ABs) and deck ratings.
• Support the Captain in navigation, emergency drills, and operational planning.

• Certificate of Competency (CoC) — Chief Mate (Reg. II/2)
• Flag State Endorsement (for foreign licence holders)
• Radar/ARPA & ECDIS certification
• Bridge Resource Management (BRM)
