Job summary

Ohio State University seeks a Chief Flight Instructor to lead the Flight Education Division, ensuring instruction meets FAA standards and coordinating classroom and in-flight instruction with faculty. The role oversees budgeting, marketing, and staffing to maintain high safety and quality in flight training.

The position requires an FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate with instrument rating and a CFI certificate, plus 5 years of relevant experience with preference for 8–12 years.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required; advanced degrees may be desirable.
• FAA Commercial Pilot Certification with an instrument rating is required.
• Certified Flight Instructor Certification is required.
• Experience with FAR Part 141; FAA examiner qualifications preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform duties of FAA certificated Chief Flight Instructor and administer Flight Education Division.
• Manage all aspects of the Division and ensure instruction complies with federal regulations.
• Oversee flight education programs, safety, exams, check-rides, and instructor standardization checks.
• Lead program development, budgeting, marketing, and hiring of Flight Instructors.

Job description

Job Title: Chief Flight Instructor Department: Engineering | University Airport Performs duties and responsibilities of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certificated Chief Flight Instructor; administer the Flight Education Division of the Aviation Department; manages all aspects of the Division; ensures that flight instruction is given in accordance with federal regulations; manages flight education programs; FAA Private Pilot Cert.; oversees flight safety programs, supervise Flight Education programs and personnel, and administer instructor standardization checks; serves as FAA certificated Chief Flight Instructor; assures instruction quality and student progress/completion, including exams and check-rides; recommends and develops flight instruction programs, improvements, innovative teaching methods, and research; instructs advanced students and assists instructors with special students; coordinates content of classroom instruction with faculty, may provide classroom instruction; assists with budgeting, marketing functions; responsible for hiring Flight Instructors, assigns duties and evaluates performance;

Additional Information: Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Advanced degrees may be desirable. FAA Commercial Pilot Certification with an instrument rating; Certified Flight Instructor Certification. 5 years of relevant experience required. 8-12 years of relevant experience preferred. Aeronautical certificates and qualifications to satisfy FAR Part 141.35; extensive experience required by FAR Part 141 in piloting and flight instruction, knowledge of general aviation operations; qualifications necessary for FAA designated examiner (or demonstrated satisfactory progress toward certification) and FAA Chief Flight Instructor; FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate, Airplane Single & Multi-Engine Land ratings, Instrument rating; and FAA Flight Instructor Certificate, Instrument & Multi-Engine Ratings; demonstrated management skills required; demonstrated academic skills required

The target hiring range for this job profile is $64,900 - $84,850. The actual salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limit to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.
