Job summary

The Culper Group, a 100% employee-owned construction materials company in New Hampshire, is seeking a Chief Financial Officer to lead financial strategy, reporting, cash flow, and ESOP governance. The CFO will supervise monthly, quarterly, and year-end closes, budgeting, forecasting, and project profitability to align financial performance with ownership objectives.

Working very closely with the owners of this Top Building Material firm who is looking for a CFO that can do a lot of in the Trench type of work (monthly close outs, quarterly close outs, cash flow analysis, etc..).

We are seeking a Chief Financial Officer to lead the financial strategy, accounting operations, cash management, and business planning for a 100% employee-owned construction organization. The CFO will oversee financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, job-cost accounting, project profitability, working capital, and financial risk across the company's operations.

The CFO will work closely with an independent CPA firm and internal leadership to support the review of financial statements, including preparation of schedules and supporting documentation, explanation of significant accounts and transactions, review of draft statements, and resolution of review inquiries. The role will also evaluate and implement recommendations involving accounting procedures, internal controls, financial reporting, and compliance.

This position partners with executive leadership, project managers, estimators, and employee-owners to connect financial performance with long-term employee-ownership objectives. The CFO will provide clear financial information regarding profitability, cash flow, backlog, company performance, and value creation, while also supporting ESOP-related financial and fiduciary activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close processes.
  • Prepare financial statements, budgets, forecasts, cash-flow projections, and management reports.
  • Coordinate the independent CPA firm's review of the company's financial statements.
  • Provide trial balances, schedules, reconciliations, contracts, supporting documentation, and management explanations requested during the review.
  • Review draft financial statements for accuracy and completeness and respond to CPA review inquiries.
  • Evaluate and implement recommendations resulting from financial statement reviews.
  • Oversee job-cost accounting, work-in-progress schedules, percentage-of-completion accounting, retainage, change orders, and cost-to-complete estimates.
  • Monitor project margins, backlog, committed costs, productivity, and construction-related financial risk.
  • Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, treasury, and working capital.
  • Support ESOP valuation, annual plan administration, financial statement review procedures, and required reporting.
  • Provide accurate and timely financial information to the ESOP trustee and other plan-related advisors.
  • Promote financial literacy and ownership awareness among employee-owners.
  • Maintain strong internal controls over company assets, project costs, cash, and financial reporting.
  • Support banking, bonding, insurance, and surety relationships.
  • Evaluate capital expenditures, equipment purchases, financing alternatives, and strategic investments.
  • Coordinate corporate tax compliance and relationships with external tax and accounting advisors.
  • Advise senior leadership, the Board of Directors, and employee-owners on profitable growth, operational efficiency, risk management, and long-term enterprise value.
  • Ensure financial decisions support both company objectives and the interests of employee-owners.

The ideal candidate will be a hands-on financial leader with strong construction accounting and job-cost experience, sound business judgment, and the ability to communicate financial information clearly to executive leadership and employee-owners. Experience working with ESOPs, CPA firms, lenders, bonding/surety partners, and external advisors is highly relevant.
