JOB SUMMARY

The CFO is a critical member of the executive leadership team, responsible for shaping financial strategy, overseeing fiscal operations, and supporting the mission through sound stewardship. The CFO ensures financial sustainability, drives operational excellence, and mentors a high-performing team in a collaborative, non-profit environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide full oversight of fiscal functions and financial performance, including nonprofit accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning.
  • Lead the development and execution of the Annual Operating Plan (AOP), multi-year strategies, and long-range financial forecasts.
  • Ensure timely and accurate monthly financial close by the 15th, and deliver actionable reporting to the CEO, senior leadership, and Board (Finance Committee/Advisory Board).
  • Present regular financial reports and analyses to inform decision-making and monitor performance against organizational goals.
  • Drive financial efficiency and organizational performance through cost controls, productivity improvements, and process enhancements.
  • Manage capital planning, cash flow, and balance sheet reconciliation to support fiscal stability.
  • Evaluate new business ventures, revenue opportunities, and strategic initiatives for financial impact and sustainability.
  • Oversee contract and grant compliance, financial reporting, and regulatory submissions including Form 990, endowment, and grant reports.
  • Maintain robust financial policies, procedures, and systems, and lead cross-departmental financial training.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of professionals across Finance, Accounting, IT, and Property Accounting.
  • Manage financial operations related to property management, ensuring compliance with HUD regulations and specialized nonprofit accounting codes.
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership to IT functions, ensuring a secure, reliable technology environment.
  • Support responsible volunteer engagement through proper financial oversight aligned with the mission and client service standards.

OTHER DUTIES

  • Identify and pursue diverse funding opportunities and implement cost-saving strategies to enhance financial sustainability.
  • Oversee lease and contract negotiations, ensuring favorable terms and organizational compliance.
  • Represent the organization at external meetings and events with professionalism, upholding confidentiality and organizational values.
  • Prepare and present materials for Board meetings, senior leadership discussions, and all-staff gatherings.
  • Lead strategic planning initiatives focused on program expansion and infrastructure development.
  • Champion continuous quality improvement efforts, monitoring progress and making data-informed adjustments.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, mission alignment, and operational excellence across all departments.
  • Ensure strict adherence to client protection policies, including abuse prevention training and mandatory reporting requirements.
  • Promote transparency and a healthy organizational culture by promptly addressing policy violations.
  • Consistently uphold and advance the mission, vision, and core values of the organization.
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with and protection of clients.
  • Complete required abuse prevention training (Safe Environment) and others, as required by program.
  • Report suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
  • Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high risk activities and supervising clients, as applicable.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to policy and procedure violations using the organization’s disciplinary procedures.
  • Provide staff with regular feedback regarding abuse risk prevention and a healthy reporting culture.
  • Ensure required abuse prevention practices are followed, and a healthy reporting culture is maintained.

EDUCATION & TRAINING:

  • CPA licensed in Texas preferred.
  • MBA or related advanced degree preferred.
  • Proven experience in serving as a Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Financial Director, or a comparable leadership role in financial management.
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in finance, ideally within a nonprofit or mission-driven organization

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Great communication skills: ability to communicate finance information in an engaging style.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of advanced nonprofit accounting required
  • Knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations for nonprofit financial record keeping and reporting especially regarding grant and other donor requirements
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Proficiency in business and accounting systems, including advanced Excel; Raiser’s Edge/Financial Edge, Yardi Breeze, Microsoft Suites preferred
  • High initiative, attention to detail, and process-oriented approach
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate or work independently
