Job description

Chief Executive Officer

Confidential Nonprofit Organization

Salt Lake City, UT

Our client, a leading and well-established Utah nonprofit organization within the human services sector, is seeking a visionary leader for the role of Chief Executive Officer. This person will lead the organization into its next chapter

of growth, community impact, and long-term sustainability.

For a senior leader who has built a career in a mission-driven environment, this is an opportunity to step into an organization with an existing strong reputation and deep roots in the community, a talented, collaborative and experienced leadership team, well-established programs, meaningful relationships with partnering organizations, and tremendous potential for its next phase of growth.

The new CEO will inherit a solid foundation spanning diverse program offerings, while having the opportunity to bring greater alignment across the organization, establish a clear strategic direction for the future, strengthen financial and operational disciplines, and expand the organization’s reach and influence.

The Opportunity

This role calls for a CEO who can be both visionary and highly practical - someone capable of establishing a compelling long-term direction while working closely with the Board and executive leadership team to translate strategy into measurable action. This is a hands-on CEO position, requiring both internal and external leadership.

Key priorities will include:

  • Leading and unifying an experienced executive leadership team around shared organizational priorities, accountability, and a strong sense of mission.
  • Developing and executing a meaningful long-term strategic plan in partnership with the Board and leadership team.
  • Evaluating opportunities to strengthen, expand, integrate, or evolve programs while balancing mission impact with financial sustainability.
  • Providing disciplined financial stewardship and ensuring resources are strategically allocated across programs and priorities.
  • Diversifying revenue through public funding, philanthropy, grants, strategic partnerships, commercial opportunities, and other sustainable sources.
  • Navigating an increasingly complex government funding and regulatory environment while building strong relationships with agencies, policymakers, and community partners.
  • Strengthening organizational systems, policies, compliance, and accountability while preserving a collaborative, entrepreneurial, and mission-driven culture.
  • Serving as a highly visible ambassador and influential voice with families, donors, government leaders, advocacy organizations, employers, service providers, and the broader community.

The CEO will report directly to the Board of Directors and serve as the primary link between the Board and executive leadership team on strategy, organizational performance, financial health, risk, and governance.

The Ideal Candidate

The strongest candidate will bring significant executive leadership experience and the judgment, presence, and interpersonal skills necessary to lead a complex, mission-driven organization.

Candidates should offer:

  • A minimum of five years demonstrated executive leadership experience; prior experience within nonprofit human services, or a closely related environment, is strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in human services, public administration, business management, or commensurate experience. Master's Degree in related studies preferred.
  • A successful track record leading executive teams and multiple programs, service lines, or business operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strategy and successfully execute it in a hands-on, resource-conscious environment.
  • Strong financial and business acumen, including experience with budgets, P&L performance, resource allocation, and program sustainability.
  • Experience working within government-funded, regulated, or complex public-sector environments.
  • Proven success cultivating funding sources, donors, partners, grants, or other revenue-development opportunities.
  • Strong executive presence and exceptional communication skills with the ability to represent an organization confidently with a wide range of audiences.
  • The ability to build trust, create consensus, strengthen accountability, and lead experienced professionals without unnecessary bureaucracy or micromanagement.
  • Genuine compassion for others and a meaningful connection to the mission of human services.
  • Experience working with state or federal policymakers, Medicaid-related programs, Vocational Rehabilitation, or similar publicly funded systems would be particularly valuable.
Why Consider This Opportunity?

This is not a turnaround assignment. It is an opportunity to lead an established organization with committed people, valued programs, and significant institutional knowledge—and help determine what comes next.

The next CEO will have the latitude to shape strategy, strengthen the organization, pursue thoughtful growth, elevate its external presence, and ensure its mission remains both impactful and sustainable for years to come.

For an experienced nonprofit executive ready to take on a broader enterprise leadership role—or an accomplished CEO seeking a meaningful organization where leadership can have a tangible and lasting impact—this represents an opportunity to bring your value and expertise to one of Utah’s leading nonprofit organizations.
