Job description

The Alberta Association of Nurses (AAN) represents Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPNs), Registered Nurses (RNs), Nurse Practitioners (NPs), retired nurses, and nursing students across Alberta. Our ultimate goal is to advance the nursing profession and empower nurses to influence health and social policy in Alberta. The strength in all designations coming together as a cohesive association allows us to be responsive to modern challenges, innovative in our work, and establish best practices for our profession moving forward.

The Chief Executive Office (CEO) of the Alberta Association of Nurses is a pivotal leadership position, providing strategic vision, operational oversight, and inspirational leadership essential for the ongoing growth and success of the Association. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the CEO will drive strategic direction, ensure financial strength and organizational sustainability, and position the AAN as a critical voice in healthcare advocacy. As the chief advocate for Alberta nurses, the CEO will cultivate an entrepreneurial and inclusive culture that mobilizes members, stakeholders, and volunteers toward the common goal of enhancing nursing’s influence and recognition.

Key responsibilities of the CEO include developing innovative strategies to attract, retain, and deeply engage members across all nursing disciplines, ensuring robust and equitable representation. The CEO will lead initiatives to shape public health policy, create resources supporting professional development, and actively advance strategic partnerships at the provincial, national, and international levels. The role requires a dynamic individual capable of navigating complex stakeholder relationships, enhancing the visibility and credibility of the Association, and delivering measurable impacts on health policy and nursing practice.

The ideal candidate brings extensive senior-level experience, preferably within membership-driven or advocacy-focused organizations, with proven expertise in stakeholder engagement across diverse sectors including healthcare, government, academia, and non-profit entities. The successful CEO will possess strong visionary leadership, strategic financial acumen, and the capacity to build and maintain influential relationships. A Master’s degree in nursing, healthcare, business, and/or law and experience as a Regulated Nurse in the province of Alberta or any other Canadian province or territory (with eligibility for Alberta registration) is required.

The AAN values equity, diversity and inclusion. Applicants with diverse backgrounds and members of the designated equity groups (women, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities, and diverse sexual orientation and gender identities) are encouraged to apply. The AAN represents all designations of regulated nurses in Alberta, and we value the unique contributions of all Association members while enhancing the health of Albertans.

Janet Soles and Associates has been retained to conduct this search on behalf of the Alberta Association of Nurses. For more information about this opportunity or to apply, please send your resume and letter of interest in confidence, with the subject line “CEO - AAN” to apply@jssearch.ca.
