Job description

In this newly created role, the Chief Development Officer (CDO), System Philanthropy, will serve as the enterprise-wide leader responsible for developing and driving strategy to achieve a transformational vision for philanthropy across NorthShore-Edward Elmhurst Health—a market-leading and growing system in metropolitan Chicago, nationally recognized for quality, innovation, and both patient and workforce experience.

The CDO will develop and execute a compelling and aspirational strategy to achieve aggressive growth in philanthropic revenue. The right candidate will leverage the strength of our system to inspire engagement, innovation, and growth across the System’s five successful local foundations, cultivating new approaches to advance our culture of philanthropy, attract transformational gifts, and strengthen our position across a large and diverse donor base. Overseeing the health system’s five local Foundations, the CDO will identify opportunities to amplify their impact, strengthen their operations, deploy best practices, and help them achieve their full potential.

This position requires an exceptional, energetic, and innovative leader with a proven track record in building and executing a successful enterprise-wide philanthropy strategy within a large and complex system. This is an outstanding opportunity for a candidate with demonstrated experience in advancing a system-wide vision for philanthropy and inspiring local Foundations in a mission-driven setting.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions :

Setting Strategic Vision

Develop a compelling and inspirational vision for philanthropy that leverages system strengths and aligns strategic fundraising initiatives with the organization’s mission, vision, and values.

Demonstrate strong strategic planning and execution skills, inspiring and leading fundraising efforts from conception to achievement.

Develop new strategies to cultivate and obtain contributions from diverse donor prospects, incorporating feedback and opinions to inform fundraising plans and messaging. Ensure alignment with System Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), health equity, and community engagement priorities.

Collaborate with system executives and local Foundation Executive Directors to craft compelling presentations and case statements for potential donors, highlighting system history, accomplishments, and community impact.

Building System Approach to Philanthropy

Foster collaboration with local Foundation teams to support innovation and shared opportunities, understanding the unique fundraising drivers of each Foundation and their communities.

Build and promote a vibrant culture of philanthropy internally and across the health system through standardized practices and effective communication.

Create and implement system-wide programs with impact across NorthShore-Edward Elmhurst’s broad footprint, including research, clinical institutes, and workforce development, developing transformative fundraising initiatives.

Enhance the role of the Executive Leadership Team, board members, and physicians in philanthropic giving.

Increase the visibility of philanthropy and demonstrate how private support benefits the community.

Operations

Lead collaborative fundraising efforts, support system-wide best practices, and provide centralized services (e.g., grant-writing, communications, prospecting) to streamline operations and support local foundations.

Utilize data to identify best practices and opportunities for improvement.

Monitor and report on fundraising progress, analyzing local, regional, and national issues and opportunities.

Minimum Requirements :

Licenses : Formal fundraising certification such as CRFE or FAHP preferred.

Work Experience : 15+ years of management experience in fundraising within a complex healthcare, academic, or corporate environment. Healthcare fundraising experience and familiarity with systems managing multiple foundations are required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

Expertise in all areas of philanthropy.

Proven ability to harmonize fundraising strategies across complex systems with multiple foundations and communities.

Strong knowledge of accounting, tax benefits / risks, legislation affecting hospital fundraising, and financial management in fundraising including major gifts, foundations, corporate, events, planned giving, and diverse populations.

Values teamwork, partnership, and initiative; capable of creating alliances that advance philanthropy.

Highly motivated, goal-oriented, inspiring confidence and fostering teamwork to strengthen and integrate system operations.

Constructively challenge the status quo and promote a collaborative environment for learning and leveraging expertise.

High intellectual curiosity regarding donor behaviors and alignment with social issues, including health equity.

Experience in capital fundraising, major gift initiatives, and successful campaigns, with the ability to research, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects.

Excellent communication and presentation skills for engaging top-level leaders, boards, physicians, trustees, volunteers, and community partners.

Proven success in motivating, coaching, and developing staff and teams.

Ability to work collaboratively within complex, dynamic organizations.
