Job summary

American Humane Society in Washington, DC, seeks a Chief Development Officer to lead strategic fundraising, cultivate major gifts, and advance the organization’s 2030 plan. You will partner with the SVP/COO and CEO and build a high-performing development team across individuals, foundations, and corporate donors.

The CDO will set fundraising direction, ensure durable revenue growth, and align programs with mission impact while representing American Humane at national and global levels.

Qualifications

• 10+ years in senior fundraising leadership within nonprofit organizations.
• Proven track record of meeting or exceeding fundraising goals.
• Experience managing major donor portfolios and strategic partnerships.

Responsibilities

• Lead the fundraising function with data-driven strategies to maximize revenue.
• Cultivate and steward high-level donors (individuals, foundations, corporations).
• Partner with executive leadership to align fundraising with the 2030 Strategic Plan.
• Oversee fundraising operations, events, and donor communications.
• Build a high-performing development team and mentor staff.
