Job summary

The Trust for Governors Island in New York City seeks a General Counsel to lead the organization’s legal function, provide strategic guidance, and manage a broad range of transactional, regulatory, and governance matters. The role collaborates with senior leadership, the NYC Law Department, and outside counsel to support the mission of Governors Island.

Location is on Governors Island with a hybrid schedule and a strong emphasis on risk management, compliance, and stakeholder engagement. A J.D.

Qualifications

• J.D. from an accredited law school.
• Admission to the NYS Bar.
• At least ten years with progressively increasing responsibilities at a law firm and/or in-house at corporate, not-for-profit, or government organization.

Responsibilities

• Advise on legal and compliance matters for The Trust for Governors Island (TGI).
• Draft and negotiate real estate and public-private partnerships, leases, and related documents.
• Oversee litigation, risk management, and insurance-related matters for TGI.
• Serve as Secretary of TGI’s Board and manage governance filings and board materials.
