Job summary

The Trust for Governors Island is seeking a General Counsel to lead legal and compliance efforts for all departments. The role oversees in-house attorneys and outside counsel, negotiates complex real estate and commercial agreements, and ensures regulatory compliance.

Located on Governors Island, the position is in-person four days a week with one remote day. A JD and NYS Bar admission are required, with at least ten years’ legal experience in relevant sectors. Competitive benefits are offered.

Qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school.
• Admission to the NYS Bar.
• At least ten years with progressively increasing responsibilities at a law firm and/or in-house at a corporate, not-for-profit, or government organization.
• Experience with commercial real estate is strongly preferred.
• Experience in representing not-for-profit entities and/or governmental/quasi-governmental entities preferred.

Responsibilities

• Advise on legal and compliance matters for the Trust for Governors Island.
• Manage in-house legal staff and outside counsel.
• Draft and negotiate real estate transactions and public-private partnerships, including ground and space leases.
• Negotiate and review construction contracts, service agreements, permits, licenses, and concession agreements.
• Provide counsel on major capital, operational and programmatic matters and risk management.
• Serve as Secretary of the Board and prepare meeting materials.
