Job summary

City of Birmingham is seeking a Chief Civil Engineer to serve as the senior engineering authority for planning, design, construction, and maintenance of public infrastructure. This role leads multidisciplinary teams and directs capital improvements including transportation, stormwater, and other municipal assets.

The position requires a PE license (Alabama or via reciprocity within 6 months), a Civil Engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program, and extensive lead-project management

Qualifications

• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Alabama or eligible via reciprocity within 6 months of hire.
• ABET-accredited degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• Lead project manager experience on complex public works projects (roads, bridges, utilities).

Responsibilities

• Prepare and manage departmental budgets and monitor spending.
• Review and approve contractor/permit plans for health, safety, and welfare.
• Coordinate with contractors, consultants, and public officials on infrastructure projects.
• Oversee design and construction phases to ensure adherence to plans, contracts, and permits.
• Provide strategic direction to executive leadership on infrastructure planning and policy.
