Job summary

The Personnel Board of Jefferson County Alabama seeks a Chief Civil Engineer for the City of Birmingham to act as the senior engineering authority overseeing planning, design, construction, and maintenance of public infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities include budgeting, scheduling, coordinating with contractors, and advising elected officials on infrastructure policy. Requires PE licensure in AL or eligibility and strong public-sector leadership.

Qualifications

• Driver's license required.
• Licensed Professional Engineer in Alabama or eligible for licensure within 6 months.
• Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Civil Engineering or related field from ABET program.
• Professional engineering experience leading design/construction of public works projects.

Responsibilities

• Plan, design, and oversee public infrastructure projects.
• Review and approve technical designs and codes.
• Manage budgets and project schedules.
• Coordinate with contractors and consultants; supervise staff.
• Advise executives on infrastructure planning and policy.
