Job summary

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) seeks a Chief Engineer, Bus, to lead the engineering strategy for our large fleet of over 1,400 heavy-duty buses and related systems in the DC region. This senior role directs a broad technical program to ensure safe, reliable and sustainable service.

You will drive fleet modernization, including zero- and low-emission technologies, reliability-driven design improvements, and data-informed maintenance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field; or HS Diploma with 4+ years of progressive engineering management experience.
• Minimum 10 years of engineering management experience in a large transit or bus environment.
• Valid driver's license; Professional Engineer license desired but not required.
• Preferred: transit industry management experience; knowledge of FTA regulations; project management; diverse staff leadership.

Responsibilities

• Directs Bus Vehicle Engineering staff in mechanical, electrical and systems engineering tasks for procurement, operation and maintenance of buses and systems.
• Develops and enforces vehicle engineering policies, procedures and standards.
• Oversees engineering procurement, contracts and capital improvements including major rehabilitations.
• Leads safety certification efforts for new or rehabilitated vehicles in coordination with safety teams.
• Prepares and presents reports to senior leadership and Board on vehicle engineering and project management issues.
