Job summary

City of Omaha is seeking a seasoned professional to lead the Building and Development division within the Planning Department. The role directs staff in plan review, code development, inspections, licensing, and technology; reports to the Planning Director.

Qualified candidates have a degree in engineering with a structural/mechanical emphasis and at least five years of progressively responsible experience, including three years in management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering with structural or mechanical emphasis.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in building plans, design, construction and inspections.
  • At least three years in a supervisory/manager role in permits/inspection.
  • Must be licensed as PE or architect in Nebraska or ICC Master Code Professional / Building Official.
  • Must travel to work sites as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of the Building and Development division within Planning.
  • Manage the division's annual budget and expenditures.
  • Administer permit, inspection, plan review, licensing and computer tech functions.
  • Direct enforcement and interpretation of building and related codes.
  • Supervise subordinates, assign work, and manage performance.
  • Coordinate with inspectors across disciplines and external agencies.
  • Approve final permits and determine building valuations for fees.
  • Represent the city as Building Official and ICC/ NFPA liaison.
  • Coordinate with Fire, Public Works, and utilities on codes and easements.
  • Maintain regular attendance per schedule; perform other related duties.
