Responsibilities

  • Provide safe, compassionate, patient-centered care to patients receiving outpatient infusion therapies.
  • Assess patients pre-treatment and during treatment, including vitals and lab results.
  • Review treatment plans for accuracy, dosing, routes, and pre-medications.
  • Identify discrepancies with orders and communicate with the care team.
  • Safely administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biotherapy, and other treatments.
  • Monitor patients for adverse reactions and intervene as needed.
  • Document assessments and treatments in the EMR.

Job Description

The Chemotherapy Infusion Nurse is responsible for providing exceptional, compassionate, and safe care to patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biotherapy, and other infusion therapies in an outpatient oncology setting.

The Chemotherapy Infusion Nurse administers treatments according to physician orders and established protocols while closely monitoring patients for treatment responses, adverse reactions, and changes in condition.

This role will report to our West Ashley clinic located at 1176 Sam Rittenburg Blvd.

Responsibilities
  • Provide safe, compassionate, and patient-centered care to patients receiving a variety of outpatient infusion therapies.
  • Assess patients prior to and throughout treatment, including vital signs, treatment readiness, laboratory results, symptoms, and overall condition.
  • Review chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and biotherapy treatment plans and orders for accuracy, including medications, doses, sequencing, routes, infusion rates, and required pre-medications.
  • Identify discrepancies or concerns with treatment orders and communicate appropriately with the physician, APP, pharmacy/mixing team, and other members of the clinical care team before treatment is administered.
  • Safely administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biotherapy, supportive medications, injections, and other prescribed treatments according to physician orders, established protocols, and organizational policies.
  • Monitor patients closely during treatment for adverse reactions, side effects, changes in condition, and other significant events; promptly intervene and notify the appropriate provider when indicated.
  • Recognize and appropriately respond to infusion reactions and other treatment-related emergencies according to established protocols.
  • Accurately document assessments, treatments, patient responses, adverse reactions, interventions, and communication with the healthcare team in the electronic medical record.
  • Provide education to patients and families regarding their treatment, potential side effects, medications, and when to contact the care team.
  • Maintain awareness of the comfort, safety, and emotional needs of patients and their families throughout their treatment experience.
  • Work collaboratively with physicians, APPs, pharmacists/mixing staff, medical assistants, laboratory staff, and other members of the multidisciplinary team to provide continuity of care.
  • Perform IV access, port access, phlebotomy, injections, and other nursing procedures within scope of practice and organizational policy.
  • Maintain competency in the administration of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biotherapy, and other infusion therapies through required education and training.
  • Follow all hazardous drug handling, PPE, infection prevention, medication safety, and workplace safety requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and organized treatment areas and assist with stocking medical supplies and medications as needed.
  • Participate in department meetings, continuing education, in-service training, quality improvement initiatives, and required organizational training.
  • Maintain current RN licensure and required certifications.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times and comply with HIPAA and organizational privacy requirements.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, accountability, and a commitment to providing high-quality and compassionate cancer care.
Required Qualifications
  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of South Carolina.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Experience working with an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) required.
  • Strong assessment, critical-thinking, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented outpatient environment.
  • Commitment to providing compassionate, safe, and patient-centered care.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in Hematology/Oncology, Chemotherapy Infusion, or an outpatient infusion setting preferred.
  • Oncology nursing experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with implanted ports, and peripheral IV access.
  • ONS Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Certificate or equivalent oncology education within 6 months of hire.
  • ONS/ONCC chemotherapy and biotherapy education or certification.
