Requires a Bachelor's in a lab science, 4 years of high-complexity testing, ASCP certification or equivalent, and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Must have 4 years of training and/or experience in high-complexity testing for the applicable specialty
  • Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution or Bachelor's degree equivalency 42CFR493.1449(c)(5)(i)(B)
  • ASCP certification or equivalent preferred

Responsibilities

  • Must be accessible to the laboratory to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation
  • Responsible for the selection of test methodology including method validation, training, and competency testing of staff performing the testing.
  • Monitor’s recording and reporting of test results.
  • Responsible for enrolling and maintaining proficiency testing program as applicable Inventory ordering should be done in such a way as to maximize effectiveness, minimize calibration and lot change frequency and minimize loss due to expiration
  • Monitor staffing patterns to suggest changes that will streamline operation and effectiveness.
  • Schedule employees as necessary to meet the needs of the laboratory.
  • The supervisor is responsible for the evaluation of direct reports assigned to the department/shift they supervise
  • Resolves technical problems with remedial action taken and documented as necessary
  • The supervisor is responsible for maintaining inspection preparedness and annual review and updates of policy and procedure manuals
  • Responsible for the performance review, recognition, counseling, and discipline of assigned staff
  • Quality Control must be maintained and reviewed per inspection and CLIA guidelines.
  • Quarterly QC meetings should be scheduled with the pathologist (laboratory director) and Assistant Manager and or Laboratory manager.
  • Ensure competency testing is documented as per CLIA guidelines
  • The Technical Supervisor should involve employees working in the department in decisions as deemed appropriate. Not all decisions can or should be made by committee but certainly input is important when warranted.
  • Review of maintenance records should be performed as required
  • Good communication lines should be well established with all shifts so that information gets to employees quickly and efficiently
  • Responsible for making known any changes within other departments (either within the laboratory or within the hospital itself) that may have effect on your own department and make sure those changes are effectively communicated to the Lab Manager as well
  • Responsibility for OSHA and other safety guidelines defined by the hospital safety policy
  • The Technical Supervisor must make sure that all department records are kept for an appropriate period of time and are appropriately labeled to allowed for easy location of documents and timely disposal
  • Responsible for continuing education possibilities to stay abreast of changes within your designated field and make necessary improvements within the department as necessary
  • Must be able to document and input test results into Cerner
  • Authorized to accept and document verbal phone orders Knowledge of computer downtime procedures Accept callback, weekend and holiday assignments as needed Maintain continuing education credits, if applicable to maintain certification Employees are held accountable for all duties of this job
