The NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDA&CS) provides services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness, and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2,000 employees.
The Food & Drug Protection Division has five sections: Food, Dairy, Feed, Drug, and Administrative Services. It also includes three laboratory sections supporting analytical work: Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Microbiology. The Division ensures the health, welfare, and economic interests of consumers by inspecting and analyzing foods, drugs, livestock feeds, fertilizers, and medical devices for wholesomeness and proper labeling.
The Organic Chemistry Section analyzes samples for pesticides, mycotoxins, and drugs using LC and GC with various detectors, including mass spectrometers. It also evaluates pesticide formulations and antifreeze samples.
The Extraction Task Force within this section handles high-volume sample processing for residue analysis, employing methods such as QuEChERS, solid-liquid, liquid-liquid, and solid-phase extractions. It maintains pesticide standards and prepares calibration standards.
This Chemist II position leads the Extraction Task Force, organizing and reviewing sample processing activities, managing inventory of standards, and developing training on extraction techniques. All work complies with quality management systems and ISO 17025 standards. The role involves other duties as assigned.
