Chemical Spray Technician - Road and Bridge

Overview

The County of Volusia is seeking a Chemical Spray Technician for the Road & Bridge Division. This role involves implementing chemical weed control along ditch banks and County Road rights-of-way at various locations throughout Volusia County, Florida. Responsibilities include spraying weeds, conducting field investigations, and handling chemicals. Candidates must have knowledge of chemical applications, be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, swim, and operate a boat with an outboard engine.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct field investigations to determine spraying needs and schedule activities.
  • Identify various ditch and aquatic weeds along roadside ditches, retention areas, and rights-of-way.
  • Select appropriate herbicides and chemical mixtures for weed control.
  • Operate, fill, and maintain chemical herbicide equipment.
  • Distribute weed-eating organisms such as grass carp and insects into control areas.
  • Maintain records and enter data via computer.
  • Climb ditch embankments for aquatic weed planting.
  • Ensure safety, property protection, and compliance with laws during spraying.
  • Maintain weeds using hand and motorized equipment in stormwater facilities.
  • Supervise and train staff on spraying and safety procedures.
  • Attend training and meetings on herbicides and spraying techniques.
  • Perform additional duties as needed and respond to emergencies.
Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED and one year of weed control experience.
  • Obtain and maintain Florida Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator, Aquatic Weed Control, and Right-of-Way certifications within six months of hire.
  • Valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (Class B) with Tanker and Air Brake Endorsements within six months of employment.
  • Ability to operate boats, ATVs, and trailers.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of herbicides and regulations.
  • Ability to identify weeds and accurately mix chemicals.
  • Ability to operate spraying equipment safely and make effective decisions.
  • Supervision, training, and effective communication skills.
Physical and Environmental Demands

Heavy physical work, outdoor exposure to chemicals, weather, insects, and other hazards. Must be able to swim, lift 75 pounds, and work on uneven ground.
