Job Summary and Responsibilities

As our Surgical Registered Nurse (RN), you will be a pivotal healthcare professional, delivering compassionate, high-quality care that truly impacts our patients' well‑being and recovery. Every day, you will leverage your expertise to provide individualized, comprehensive care, making critical assessments, performing skilled procedures, and meticulously implementing patient care plans. You'll collaborate seamlessly within an interdisciplinary team, contributing to a dynamic environment focused on optimal patient outcomes. To be successful, you will possess keen assessment skills, acute critical thinking, a patient‑first mindset, and a sense of urgency and dedication to excellence in a fast‑paced environment.

  • Safety: Maintains current knowledge of all patient safety standards and National Patient Safety goals and consistently incorporates into nursing practice.
  • Able to safely administer medications and blood/blood products using the 7 rights of medication and blood administration. Uses 2 separate hospital approved identifiers to safely identify the patient prior to medication/blood administration.
  • Maintain a safe, therapeutic work environment at all times and identify and address problems to the appropriate departments.
  • Adheres to principles of infection control, including medical and surgical asepsis and isolation techniques. Demonstrates aseptic technique while conducting sterile dressing changes, urinary catheterizations, and other similar duties.
  • Receive, interpret and implement physician orders in a safe and timely manner. Uses hospital approved process for telephone and/or verbal orders that include a readback of all orders.
Job Requirements
Required
  • High School Graduate or GED (upon hire) to obtain required licensure.
  • Registered Nurse: CA license (upon hire).
  • 1 year of operating room/surgical experience; training may be considered if operational conditions permit.
  • Basic Life Support – CPR, American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support – American Heart Association (AHA).
Preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree or other upon hire.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support upon hire.

Bakersfield Memorial Hospital includes 385 general acute beds, 48 licensed critical care beds, 13 state‑of‑the‑art surgical suites, a full‑service Emergency Department with an Accredited Chest Pain Center and Nationally Certified Stroke Center, a Family Care and Birthing Center, the Lauren Small Children’s Center including the area’s only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a Level II NICU, the Sarvanand Heart & Brain Center with Kern County’s first Bi‑Plane Interventional Suite, the Center for Wound Care and Hyperbarics, and many more services. Memorial Hospital is a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital and hosts the Bakersfield Ronald McDonald House. The hospital has been serving residents of Bakersfield and Kern County with quality, compassionate care since 1956.
