Charge Nurse (RN) - Acute Care (MedSurg)

Responsibilities
  • The RN Clinical Charge Nurse is responsible for directing and overseeing the daily activities of the unit on an assigned shift to ensure the safe delivery of care.
  • The Charge Nurse acts as a caregiver and may take modified patient care assignments.
  • Practices in a clinical environment supported by Nurse Managers and leadership, guided by the WellStar Shared Governance Model and the Professional Nursing Practice Model, emphasizing evidence-based practice and research.
  • Contributes to establishing practices that ensure excellence in patient care, efficient resource use, and leadership tasks such as staffing, patient flow, clinical expertise, physician rounding, committee involvement, and survey readiness.
  • Serves as a resource to other areas, promoting operational understanding and hospital awareness.
  • Supports the growth and development of team members, fostering departmental skills and expertise.
  • Builds rapport between nurses and physicians, serving as a role model.
  • Upholds licensure, knowledge, and practice standards as per the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act and ANA Code of Ethics.
  • Supports service excellence, patient advocacy, and system policies.
  • Utilizes clinical expertise to deliver safe, age-appropriate, culturally sensitive care and partners in care delivery.
  • Participates proactively as part of an interdisciplinary team ensuring high-quality patient care.

Qualifications
Minimum Education
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program (Associate Degree/Diploma). A BSN is preferred.
Licensure/Certification
  • Active RN license in Georgia
  • Current BLS from the American Heart Association
  • National certification in specialty area preferred (may require additional certifications like ACLS, PALS)
Experience
  • At least 1 year of nursing experience required; 2 years preferred.
  • Experience as relief charge nurse with clinical expertise is preferred.
Skills

  • Basic computer skills and technology utilization
  • Strong interpersonal, critical thinking, and decision-making skills
  • Effective communication both orally and in writing
