A leading healthcare institution in Maryland is seeking a Chaplain to provide spiritual support to patients and staff across its facilities. The ideal candidate will hold a Master’s degree and have experience in healthcare ministry, demonstrating strong communication and decision-making skills to handle sensitive situations. This role involves collaboration with an interdisciplinary team and participation in hospital initiatives, including leading prayer opportunities and addressing ethical concerns within a healthcare setting.
Provides spiritual and emotional support to patients, their families/loved ones and staff in all areas of Mercy Medical Center and to other designated areas of Mercy Health Services. Provides group prayer opportunities. Represents Pastoral Care in institutional initiatives.
License Requirements: N/A • Certification Requirements: Certification required as recognized by the Spiritual Care Collaborative of APC, NACC, CAPPE/ACPEP and NAJC within 2 years of hire. • Age Specific Care Provided For: Neo-natal Pediatrics Adolescents Adults Geriatrics • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Computer proficiency and technical aptitude with the ability to utilize one or more of the following: ••• Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel ••• Microsoft Outlook ••• Meditech (if applicable to position) ••• Epic (if applicable to position) ••• Performance Manager/NetLearning Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language in an understandable manner. Must be able to work independently and possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action. Must possess the ability to effectively communicate and deal tactfully with other personnel, visitors, patients, physicians, customers, and the general public. Must be flexible, have personal integrity, and the ability to function effectively as a team with other employees. Must be able to follow written and oral instructions. • Other Requirements: Pastoral theology that is both contemporary and functional and integrated into professional practice. Must be familiar with and able to facilitate Medical/ethical issues within the guidelines of the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Healthcare Services. Current theology, ecclesiology, spiritual and sacramental practices within the Roman Catholic tradition as well as other traditions. An awareness of, and ability to articulate ways in which their feelings, attitudes, values and assumptions affect their ministries. Ability to function effectively under stress, to cope with crisis situations and to respond creatively to a multiplicity of challenges. Ability to use spiritual assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation in the clinical setting. Understanding of the ways in which psycho-social dynamics and cultural/ethnic differences affect pastoral care practices. Ability to initiate, deepen and terminate pastoral relationships. Skills in utilizing pastoral perspective and competence in a variety of functions, such as worship, teaching, administration, and team building. Skills in facilitating decision-making based on an understanding of religious heritage, theological values, behavioral sciences, networking, system thinking, ethical principles, and the individual’s own values. Evidence of understanding the operational systems in the clinical setting. Ability to function as an integral member of an interdisciplinary team. Facility in communicating with other disciplines through use of referral systems, chart entries, and other mechanisms in the clinical setting. Spiritual assessment and appropriate referrals Advance Directive education and Ethical consults Leadership of religious/prayer services and rituals Appropriate and Timely Documentation Must be willing to serve as on-call chaplain as needed (nights/weekends included) to assure provision of 24/7 pastoral coverage.
