Job summary

OHSU School of Dentistry is seeking a Dental Assistant to support multiple departments under the supervision of a dentist. The role involves preparing the station and instruments, assisting with 4- and 6-handed dentistry, retracting tissues, and handling rubber dam placement as directed by the dentist.

The position requires sterilization, radiographs, patient instruction on oral hygiene, and ensuring readiness of work areas.

Qualifications

• Completion of an approved Dental Assistant training program OR one year of experience as a chair side Dental Assistant
• Certification by the Oregon State Board of Dentistry for Radiological Proficiency required for all positions
• BLS from AHA required; onboarding during onboarding process

Responsibilities

• Provide chairside dental support to dentists, dental students, or dental hygienists
• Prepares work station, instruments, and materials, and escorts patient to the work station
• Provides 4 and 6-handed dental assistance support for OHSU dental practices
• Retracts a patient's cheek, tongue, or other parts of tissues during a dental operation
• Assists with the placement or removal of a rubber dam and accessories used for its placement and retention
• Uses suction, compressed air, mouthwashes, and water to remove debris during operative procedures
• Prepares amalgams and adhesives
• Reviews pre- and post-operative instructions with patients
• Sterilizes and wraps instruments and cleans work station between patients
• Maintains operatory equipment
• Exposes radiographs for dental diagnostic purposes
• Instructs individuals in oral hygiene techniques and preventative procedures
• Ensures work areas are stocked and ready for patient care
