The University of Maryland School of Medicine invites applications for a visionary leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and Director of the Institute of Human Virology (IHV). This combined leadership role aims to advance integrated research across microbiology, immunology, and virology, with a strong emphasis on mentorship and collaboration.

Qualifications

• Academic accomplishments and national or international distinction commensurate with appointment as Professor at UMSOM.
• A strong track record of federally funded research and knowledge of major grants.
• Substantial leadership experience in a complex environment within a basic science department or research institute.
• Ability to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and build partnerships inside and outside the institution.
• Financial, operational and administrative acumen, including managing a portfolio of programs.
• Entrepreneurial approach with a record of developing scientific strategy and recruiting.
• Ability to articulate and execute a clear vision for both department and institute.
• Knowledge of biosafety, especially with high-risk pathogens.
• Experience mentoring trainees, students, postdocs, and junior faculty.
• National/international recognition and engagement in scientific communities.
• Ability to communicate to scientific audiences and public media.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic, academic, scientific, and administrative leadership for the Department and IHV.
• Establish an ambitious scientific agenda and recruit outstanding faculty.
• Strengthen foundational and translational research with institutional collaborations.
• Foster interdisciplinary discovery across the department, IHV, and UMSOM.
• Advance the institution's national and international leadership in microbiology, immunology, and virology.
