Job summary

The University of Maryland School of Medicine seeks an accomplished scientist-leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and Director of the Institute of Human Virology (IHV). This unique dual leadership role unites basic science, translational research, and clinical scholarship to advance discovery and education.

The successful candidate will guide two premier entities, recruit world-class faculty, and strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration.

Qualifications

• Terminal degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. virology, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology).
• Academic accomplishments and national or international distinction commensurate with appointment as Professor at UMSOM; rank and tenure status determined by qualifications.
• Strong track record of federally funded research and major collaborative or programmatic grants preferred.
• Substantial leadership experience in a complex academic environment, ideally within a basic science department/institute.
• Demonstrated ability to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and build partnerships within and outside the department, institute, and institution.
• Demonstrated financial, operational, and administrative acumen, including stewardship of significant resources.
• Entrepreneurial approach with a record of recruiting, inspiring, and mentoring a diverse team.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic, academic, scientific, and administrative leadership for the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.
• Lead integration with IHV and other units to advance a unified scientific agenda across microbiology, immunology, and virology.
• Foster interdisciplinary collaboration and build partnerships across UMSOM and beyond.
• Recruit, develop, and mentor outstanding faculty and trainees; support career development.
• Position UMSOM and IHV for national and international leadership in the field.
