Job summary

Premier Veterinary Group Chicago is seeking a Veterinary Technician in Surgery/Anesthesia to join a collaborative team in a high-acuity environment. You will support anesthesia protocols, monitor patients, educate clients, and assist with advanced procedures in a busy emergency/specialty hospital.

Qualifications

• Current CVT, LVT, or RVT credentialing is required.
• At least two years of veterinary anesthesia experience, preferably in emergency/surgical settings.
• Strong knowledge of anesthetic protocols, monitoring, pain management, and recovery.
• Experience with ASA classifications 3–5 is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and run patient appointments for the Surgery department.
• Collaborate with surgeons and anesthesiologist during consultations, admissions, and discharges with client education.
• Induce, maintain, and monitor anesthesia for soft tissue, orthopedic, and advanced procedures.

Compensation: $25-32/hr for CVTs | $35-45/hr for VTS

In Your Day-to-Day, You Will:

• Support the Surgery department by coordinating and running patient appointments, including obtaining medical histories, assisting with patient assessments, reviewing treatment plans, and preparing patients and clients for upcoming procedures.
• Partner closely with surgeons and the anesthesiologist during consultations, admissions, and discharges while providing clients with clear education, compassionate support, and timely updates.
• Prepare individualized anesthetic protocols and accurately calculate and administer anesthetic medications, fluids, and continuous-rate infusions.
• Induce, maintain, and closely monitor anesthesia for a variety of advanced procedures, including soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, endoscopy, CT imaging, and minimally invasive laparoscopic and arthroscopic procedures.
• Assess and monitor patients before, during, and after anesthesia, quickly recognizing and responding to changes in patient status.
• Provide exceptional nursing care throughout the surgical process, with a continued focus on patient safety, comfort, pain management, and recovery.
• Perform advanced technical skills, including venipuncture, IV catheter placement, medication administration, digital radiography, surgical preparation, and anesthetic recovery.
• Assist surgeons during complex procedures while maintaining sterile technique and ensuring all necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment are prepared and readily available.
• Maintain complete and accurate medical documentation, including anesthetic records, treatments administered, patient status, procedures performed, and supplies used.
• Clean, maintain, and troubleshoot specialized surgical and anesthesia equipment and instrumentation.
• Collaborate with surgeons, veterinarians, technicians, and support team members to promote efficient patient flow and a seamless experience from consultation through discharge.
• Contribute to a positive, supportive team culture while continuing to strengthen your clinical knowledge and technical skills through ongoing learning and professional development.

What You Bring:

• Current CVT, LVT, or RVT credentialing is required for this position.
• At least two years of veterinary anesthesia experience, preferably within an emergency, specialty, or surgical environment.
• Comprehensive knowledge of anesthetic protocols, advanced patient monitoring, pain management, and recovery.
• Experience monitoring higher-risk patients, including ASA classifications 3–5, is strongly preferred.
• Accuracy in calculating and administering anesthetic agents, medications, fluids, and continuous-rate infusions.
• Strong clinical judgment and the ability to recognize and respond appropriately to changes in a patient’s condition.
• Experience reviewing medical records and maintaining thorough, accurate documentation related to appointments, procedures, anesthesia, treatments, and patient status.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to educate and support clients throughout the surgical process.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a proactive, solutions-oriented approach.
• The ability to remain calm, adaptable, and positive while working in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
• A collaborative approach to patient care and a commitment to building strong relationships with colleagues, clients, and the veterinary community.
