The City of Orlando Careers is seeking a part-time Teacher/Mentor to provide academic tutoring, mentoring, and SEL activities for middle school students in the Bubble Kids Program.   • Bachelor's degree and current Florida teacher certification required.
  • One year of experience working with youth in an educational, recreation, mentoring, youth development, after-school, community-based, or related setting required; or an equivalent combination of related training and experience.
  • Experience working with middle school youth preferred. Knowledge of or experience with SEL, youth mentoring, trauma-informed practices, positive youth development, behavioral support, or substance-use prevention preferred.

Job Summary

Provides academic support, mentoring, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), and prevention-focused enrichment services to middle school youth participating in the Bubble Kids Program. The Teacher/Mentor helps students strengthen academic performance, emotional regulation, decision-making, positive peer relationships, resiliency, and connections with trusted adults.

This position supports structured youth programming designed to provide early intervention for students experiencing academic, behavioral, attendance, or social challenges that may increase vulnerability to negative peer influence or substance misuse. Work is performed under the direction of the designated Program Manager and/or Site Supervisor.

Salary

$25.00 Hourly

Essential Functions
  • Provide individualized and small-group academic tutoring and support.
  • Assist students with study skills, organization, goal setting, and school engagement.

Work Hours

School Year: Approximately 6 hours per week, based on program and school-site needs.

Hours may include direct student services, SEL and prevention activities, preparation, documentation, meetings, and required training. Specific days and times will be established based on the participating site schedule.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledge of adolescent development, SEL, and positive youth development.
  • Ability to build supportive relationships and effectively engage middle school youth.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and classroom/group management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with families, school staff, program staff, and community partners.
  • Ability to maintain required documentation and support program outcome tracking.
Working Conditions

Work may be performed in schools, recreation centers, community facilities, and other program locations. Some activities may occur outdoors and may involve exposure to heat, insects, and changing weather conditions. Occasional evening or special-event hours may be required.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree and current Florida teacher certification required.

  • Experience working with middle school youth preferred. Knowledge of or experience with SEL, youth mentoring, trauma-informed practices, positive youth development, behavioral support, or substance-use prevention preferred.
  • Applicants must possess a valid Florida driver's license and be First Aid/CPR certified or able to obtain certification prior to employment. Must pass criminal background check and polygraph.

THIS IS A PART_TIME_POSITION WITH NO GUARANTEE OF A CERTAIN NUMBER OF HOURS AND NO BENEFITS. THIS POSITION INVOLVES WORKING ON A TEMP/SEASONAL CONTRACT WHICH CAN BE RENEWED ANNUALLY BASED ON PERFORMANCE AND BUSINESS NEEED.

Experience Equivalency
  • Two (2) years of direct experience for an associate degree;
  • Four (4) years of direct experience for a bachelor's degree;
  • Six (6) years of direct experience for a master's degree; or
  • Nine (9) years of direct experience for a doctoral degree.
