The Surgical Technologist is an allied health professional who works with surgeons and other healthcare practitioners to provide surgical care to patients in various settings. They handle instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during surgeries, possessing expertise in sterile and aseptic techniques, human anatomy, surgical procedures, and the use of relevant tools and technologies to support physicians during invasive procedures.

Responsibilities

• Maintain the sterile field.
• Understand the procedure and anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
• Ensure quality patient care and safety during procedures.
• Check supplies and equipment; scrub, gown, and glove.
• Set up sterile instruments, supplies, and medications.
• Perform counts with circulator prior to incision and before closing.
• Gown and glove surgeons and assistants.
• Help in draping sterile fields.
• Pass instruments and sharps during procedures.
• Ensure proper disposition of specimens and cultures.
• Maintain sterile technique throughout.
• Prepare sterile dressings.
• Clean and sterilize instruments.
• Assist in terminal cleaning and prepping for the next patient.
• May retrieve and transport medications.
• If enrolled in an approved Surgical First Assist Program, perform functions as a Certified Surgical First Assistant.
• Report to supervisor and Clinical Director.
• Follow safety protocols to minimize exposure to hazards.

Qualifications

• BCLS certification within 120 days of employment.
• Experience in multiple specialties preferred.
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification required.
• Effective communication in English.
