Job description

JOB TITLE: Certified Surgical Technologist

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Physician and/or Registered Nurse

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Surgical technologists, also called scrubs and surgical or operating room technicians, assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. Surgical technologists are members of operating room teams, which most commonly include surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS:

  • A graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program.
  • Must be certified to perform CPR with 0-2 years of clinical experience in a related field.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares and maintains medical equipment for surgical procedures.
  • Prepares the operating room by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and solutions before an operation.
  • Follows hospital regulations and industry procedures to tend to patients during pre-operation procedures.
  • Performs pre-operation preparations on the patient's skin, body, and medical equipment.
  • Assembles and checks sterile and non-sterile equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Prepares patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and disinfecting incision sites.
  • Transports patients to the operating room, helps position them, and covers them with sterile drapes.
  • Observes vital signs, checks charts, and assists with gowning and gloving.
  • Passes instruments and supplies to surgeons.
  • Helps with retractors, sutures, sponges, needles, and specimen handling.
  • Operates sterilizers, lights, suction machines, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Assists with patient transfer post-operation and cleans the operating room.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Standing for long periods and lifting or turning disabled patients.
  • Sitting and standing typical of an office environment.
  • Concentrating for up to four hours.
  • Verbal communication in person and via telephone.
  • Using a computer keyboard and viewing monitors.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

  • Providing age-appropriate care, demonstrating knowledge of growth and development principles.
  • Assessing patient data relative to age-specific needs and providing appropriate care.
  • Applying the nursing process effectively.
  • Using recognized communication channels.
  • Maintaining good interpersonal relationships with patients and team members.

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work in a clean, well-lit, cool environment.
  • Stand for long periods; alert during operations.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, unpleasant sights, odors, and materials.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work.
