How you\'ll contribute

You\'ll play a key role in our cardiovascular surgery team, working side by side with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and OR staff to deliver exceptional care. In this role, you will:

• Function as the primary surgical first assist to the surgeon, providing direct intraoperative support throughout the procedure.
• Utilize your advanced knowledge of anatomy, surgical techniques, and procedural steps to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and the team.
• Assist with patient positioning, prepping, draping, and ensuring optimal exposure and safety before and during surgery.
• Support the RN and OR team in creating a seamless, patient-centered surgical experience.

Qualifications and requirements

• Education: Associate\'s degree preferred; graduation from an accredited program in a related discipline required.
• License: Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
• Certifications: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
• Experience: One year of relevant experience.
• NBSTSA First Assist certification required upon hire (exemptions apply to surgical technologists practicing as of July 1, 2013).

Required skills

• Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
• Capacity to remain calm, focused, and effective in stressful situations and to take appropriate, timely action.
• Arterial line placement competency required within 6 months of hire.

Key responsibilities

• Position patients to ensure optimal exposure for the surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment as needed while maintaining patient comfort and safety.
• Provide clear visualization of the operative field through appropriate retraction, tissue manipulation, sponging, suctioning, and irrigation.
• Utilize proper techniques to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis as directed by the surgeon.
• Assist with closure of body planes, application of wound dressings, and securing drainage systems.
