Job summary

Ascension in Indianapolis, IN seeks a Surgical Assistant to position patients, assist with visualization of the operative field, and support hemodynamics and closure during procedures in the Main OR.

The role requires BLS within 30 days, NBSTSA/NCCSA/ABSA credentialing prior to hire, and a High School diploma with relevant experience or an advanced technical degree. On-site schedule in a day shift supports patient care and team collaboration.

Qualifications

• BLS Provider within 1 month of hire date.
• Surgical Assistant credential (NBSTSA, NCCSA, or ABSA) obtained prior to hire date.
• Education: High School diploma or equivalent with 2 years of cumulative experience OR Associate's/Technical degree OR 4 years of applicable cumulative job-specific experience.

Responsibilities

• Position patient to optimize exposure for surgical procedures with stabilizing equipment as needed.
• Provide visualization of the operative site using tissue manipulation, retraction, sponging, suction and irrigation.
• Achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis using appropriate techniques.
• Assist with wound closure, dressings, and drainage systems.
• Assist in room clean-up and removal of soiled case cart, supplies and trash after the case.
• Prepare the surgical suite according to surgeon's preference cards with instruments and supplies.

How you’ll make an impact in this role

• Position patient to give best exposure for surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety.
• Provide visualization of the operative site using appropriate method, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning and irrigation.
• Utilize appropriate technique to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.
• Assist with body plane closure, application of wound dressings and securing of drainage systems.
• Assist in room clean up and the removal of the soiled case cart, supplies, and trash from OR room as needed at the completion of the surgical case.
• Participate as a surgical team member in the preparation of the surgical suite according to surgeon's preference cards with appropriate instruments, resources and supplies.

What minimum qualifications you’ll need

Licensure / Certification / Registration:

• BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.

One or more of the following required:

• Surgical Assistant credentialed from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.
• Surgical Assistant credentialed from the National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.
• Surgical Assistant credentialed from the American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.

Education:

• High School diploma equivalency with 2 years of cumulative experience OR Associate's
  degree/Technical degree OR 4 years of applicable cumulative job specific experience required.
