Job summary

AdventHealth in Tampa, FL is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to ensure sterile instrument sets meet strict aseptic standards.

The role handles decontamination, tray assembly, sterilization processes, and equipment management, with training provided and opportunities for career development.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read, write and understand English to perform duties.
  • Understand needs of customers and respond professionally.
  • Able to adapt to change and work under deadlines.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and sterile processing.
  • Understand aseptic principles and infection control in sterilization.
  • Experience with computer systems is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Select materials and packaging for instrument sets, ensuring aseptic technique.
  • Ensure sterility indicators and lot stickers are present on all sets.
  • Operate sterilization equipment and choose correct methods per instructions.
  • Review sterilizer charts to verify parameters before use.
  • Maintain records of sterilization processes in log books or systems.
  • Identify and segregate reusable items for decontamination and sterilization.
  • Disassemble and inspect items for damage and ensure safe operation.
  • Assemble instruments and records in tracking systems or sheets.
  • Use recall process for sterilization failures and inform supervisors.
  • Communicate with other hospital departments to resolve issues.
  • Participate in training and department meetings to stay updated.
  • Rotate assignments across decontamination, tray assembly, sterilization and equipment mgmt.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Description:
  • Selects appropriate materials and sterilization packaging for each instrument set, ensuring proper wrapping for aseptic technique.
  • Ensures sterility indicators and lot stickers are present on all instrument sets and packages.
  • Operates complex sterilization equipment, selecting the correct method of sterilization based on manufacturer instructions.
  • Reviews and signs all sterilizer recording charts to verify proper sterilization parameters before releasing items for clinical use.
  • Monitors sterilizer printouts, maintains records, and documents all requirements in appropriate log books or computer systems.
  • Properly identifies and segregates reusable items for decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization, selecting appropriate cleaning methods based on manufacturer instructions.
  • Disassembles and inspects items for damage or missing components, ensuring safe operation of all equipment in the decontamination area.
  • Accurately assembles instruments, complex instrument sets, and other surgical items, recording information in the computer tracking system or paper instrument count sheet.
  • Utilizes the recall process for sterilization failures and notifies supervisors or managers of positive results.
  • Communicates effectively with all hospital departments and within the department, using the chain of command to resolve issues.
  • Participates in training new employees, attending in-services and department meetings to maintain knowledge base.
  • Rotates assignments among various areas within the department, including decontamination, surgical tray assembly, sterilization processes, and equipment management.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate by reading, writing legibly, speaking and comprehending English effectively in order to carry out job requirements. [Required]

  • Understanding of the principles of microbiology, aseptic principles and techniques, and infection control as they apply to sterile supply operation. [Required]
  • Basic knowledge of prevention of cross contamination and the critical nature of nosocomial infections. [Required]
  • Knowledge of the use, operation, maintenance, assembly, disassembly and cleaning requirements of the full range of instruments and equipment. [Required]
  • Ability and experience with computer systems [Preferred]
Education:
  • High School Grad or Equiv [Required]
  • Technical/Vocational School [Preferred]
Field of Study:
  • in healthcare sterile processing
Work Experience:
  • 1+ related experience [Preferred]
