Job summary

UC San Diego is seeking a Certified Phlebotomy Technician to perform specimen collection, accessioning, phlebotomy, and related duties in a fast-paced hospital laboratory.

This role requires knowledge of infection control, medical terminology, and laboratory regulations, with responsibilities including instrument operation, preventative maintenance, safety, and customer service.

Qualifications

• Must hold a CPT certification.
• Knowledge of Hospital Isolation, Infection Control protocols, patient comfort/safety, and medical terminology.
• Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory regulations, laws, and ethical requirements.
• Possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position.
• Demonstrated skills/knowledge in basic collection and specimen preparation, storage, and disposal of the specimen.

Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION

Under direct and constant supervision, performs specimen processing, accessioning, phlebotomy, heel and finger sticks, customer service, clerical duties, effective communication with laboratory customers, problem resolution, record keeping, supply inventory and maintenance, as well as cleaning and maintaining a safe work environment.

Additional duties will include the operation of instruments, preventative maintenance as appropriate to each section/department assigned. Performs all duties in a manner consistent with current laboratory safety standards. May be asked to travel to another location to perform assigned duties and assist with staffing coverages.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT).

• Proven knowledge of Hospital Isolation, Infection Control protocols, patient comfort/safety, and medical terminology.

• Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory regulations, laws, and ethical requirements.

• Possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position.

• Demonstrated skills/knowledge in basic collection and specimen preparation, storage, and disposal of the specimen.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 6 months of hospital experience or greater than 1 year of experience in an Outpatient setting

• 6 months of experience with hospital automation.

• Proven experience with specimen processing.

• Demonstrated experience working in a high-volume lab.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

• Must be able to work various hours and locations, based on business needs.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $76,275 - $76,275 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $36.53 - $36.53

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
