Job summary

Duke Health, part of Duke University Health System, seeks an Ophthalmic Assistant to support Eye Center physicians and technicians in performing diagnostic tests.

Under close supervision you will help with screenings, tonometry, slit lamp exams, and contact lens fittings, while maintaining instruments and patient charts. Prior ophthalmology experience is preferred but not required; training is provided.

Qualifications

• Education equivalent to a high school diploma is required.
• Minimum 1 year of directly related experience in Ophthalmology or Optometry.

Responsibilities

• Assist Eye Center physicians and technicians with diagnostic tests for eye problems.
• Perform preliminary screenings, visual field tests, color vision tests, tonometry, and pupil testing prior to dilation.
• Examine cornea, lens, and anterior chamber with a slit lamp and note deviations.
• Measure acuity with/without glasses and obtain objective lens measurements; document findings.
• Assist in fitting contact lenses and calibrate/maintain instruments and supply rooms.
